Yoni Steaming for Feminine Health
Yoni steaming is a powerful healing practice I use personally and with the women I support. I was first introduced to it as a method for postpartum recovery, but as I explored its benefits more deeply, I discovered how versatile and effective it can be for a variety of women’s health needs.
If you think yoni steaming sounds weird, intimidating, or overly complicated, you're not alone. But the truth is, it’s much simpler than it seems. You don’t need fancy tools or expensive kits to get started. In fact, many women begin with basic herbs or even plain water and still experience powerful results. While special equipment can make things easier, it's not necessary. You can start steaming with typical things you have around the house.
This Free Resource breaks down the science behind yoni steaming—dispelling myths and showing that it's not some mystical nonsense. It will walk you through the process step-by-step, making it clear, accessible, and empowering.
What is yoni steaming?
Yoni steaming is an ancient practice that aids in feminine well-being. Yoni steaming is sometimes called vaginal steaming or V-steaming. It is a therapeutic practice involving sitting or squatting over steaming water infused with herbs. The steam is intended to surround the vulva and purportedly enter the vaginal and uterine tissues.
Yoni is a term that is used for the word vulva, but it can encompass the other female reproductive organs as well. In Sanskrit, "yoni" translates to "womb," "origin," or "source".
Yoni steaming has many benefits, such as:
Balancing vaginal pH
Cleansing uterus and vagina
Treating infections
Balancing hormonal production
Boosting fertility
Aiding in tissue repair postpartum
Alleviating menstrual cramps
Promoting circulation
Hemorrhoid relief
Ingrown hair relief
& more
How It Works
Vaginal steaming delivers herbal steam directly to the vulva, perineum, vaginal canal, cervix, and uterus. This makes it a unique and gentle method for accessing delicate and sensitive areas without the use of hands, tools, surgery, or invasive techniques.
Due to the permeability of the vaginal mucous membranes and the rich network of blood vessels in the area, steaming may serve as a viable method of herbal administration. If herbs are absorbed during a session, they could potentially support targeted healing by delivering specific medicinal properties into the bloodstream. For instance, instead of relying solely on oral antibiotics to treat infections of the reproductive organs, individuals may see comparable outcomes using antibacterial herbs administered through vaginal steaming.
The heat from steam promotes vasodilation, increasing blood flow to the vagina, cervix, and uterus. As with any organ system, improved circulation enhances overall function and vitality. Steaming encourages deep cleansing and drainage of both external and internal tissue, which may help reduce or eliminate swollen bumps, ingrown hairs, clogged ducts, and similar concerns.
Many users report that regular vaginal steaming supports more efficient and timely menstruation. While the uterus is designed to complete this monthly process on its own, certain modern practices, such as tampon use and hormonal birth control, can hinder the natural flow. This often results in increased clotting and the presence of dark or brown blood. After consistent steam sessions, some users experience the release of long-retained menstrual residue. Once this residue clears, periods often become lighter and more consistent, with bright red, oxygenated blood from start to finish.
Vaginal steaming has also been linked to improvements in abnormal discharge, particularly thick, yellow, green, or malodorous secretions. These conditions can encourage the growth of harmful bacteria, yeast, and viruses. By supporting drainage and improving circulation, steaming may help restore a healthy vaginal pH and microbial balance. The elevated temperature may also help deactivate certain heat-sensitive pathogens.
Research has shown that vaginal touch can trigger oxytocin release in the brain. If steam produces a similar response, it may explain reports from users who experience deeper sleep, heightened feelings of love and pleasure, increased breast milk production, enhanced relaxation, and improved mood following steam sessions—all effects commonly associated with the oxytocin hormone.
Yoni Steam Setups
All you need to yoni steam is a pot of water and some herbs. However, incorporating a few additional tools can make the experience safer and more comfortable.
Having something to sit on while you do your steam is helpful, but it is possible to do a steam simply by squatting over a bowl of steaming water. The steam will be hot, so be sure to maintain a distance of at least six inches from the bowl.
I highly recommend using a stool while yoni steaming. A stool will help you to relax during your steam, and it will help prevent accidental burns by keeping your body a safe distance from the bowl.
There are several types of stools that are sold for yoni steaming. These stools are typically low to the ground with a hole in the middle to allow the steam through. As you can see in the photos above, the holes range in size and shape. One example is the horseshoe-shaped stool, traditionally used as a birth stool. It’s commonly used by midwives during labor, for delivering the placenta, and can also double as a yoni steaming stool.
Another option is the steaming box. These are often handmade, beautifully crafted, and tend to be more expensive. This is my favorite type of steaming stool because the enclosed design helps retain heat, keeping the herbal steam warm for a longer session. It also reduces the risk of accidental burns if the bowl is bumped or tipped over. With open-style stools, there is a chance the bowl could be knocked over, so be sure to stay mindful of that while steaming.
I don’t recommend using plastic or electric yoni steaming setups. In my experience, they’re often poorly made and do not work well. While they’re marketed as “portable,” the truth is that any yoni steaming setup can be made portable with just a few simple tools. Another concern is safety. All plastics, even those labeled BPA-free, can release harmful chemicals when heated. Introducing toxins into a healing practice is counterproductive, which is why I don’t recommend using plastic at all.
Yoni steaming is simple and doesn’t require complicated equipment. The essentials include a bowl, pot, water, herbs, and a stool. I also like to place my bowl on a small box to elevate it, but setting it directly on the floor works too. Just be sure to protect your floor with a towel or trivet, as the contents will be hot.
How to Steam
First, you will need to purchase or make an herbal blend. There are many herbs that can be used for different things. I will share my favorite blends and their uses later in this resource.
Next, you will need to boil a pot of water to brew your herbal infusion. I use 2-4 cups of water and 1/4 cup of my herbal blend. Follow the directions on the back of the packaging if you are using a premade yoni steaming blend.
When the water comes to a boil, remove from heat, and pour the herbs in to steep for 2-5 minutes. Set up your space while the infusion is steeping.
Transfer contents into your yoni steaming bowl. You can leave the herbs in. I recommend using a glass or ceramic bowl. A stainless steel bowl will get very hot, and a plastic bowl will release toxins into your infusion and steam.
Set the bowl under your stool. Test the temperature of the steam by placing your hand 6 inches above the pot to make sure it isn’t too hot.
Sit down and enjoy! Typically, a steaming session will last 5-20 minutes. I like to listen to music, meditate, or do breathing exercises while I steam. Pro tip: It’s a good idea to release your bladder before you sit down to steam.
After your steam is complete, throw away the herbal infusion. It is not sanitary to reuse the herbal infusion.
Safety Considerations
Always test the heat of your steam before sitting. Let the steam cool down until the feels as relaxing as a warm bath. The steam temperature should always feel 100% comfortable & soothing. If at any point you have the instinct to get up because the steam is too hot, do not hesitate. Wait and let the steam cool down to a comfortable temperature before resuming your session.
Consult your doctor or midwife if you have question or concerns.
Steaming in Pregnancy
Steaming in pregnancy is not recommended because it can trigger labor, resulting in a miscarriage or preterm birth, depending on how far along the mother is.
Yoni steaming is a great practice to prepare your womb for pregnancy, but it is best to avoid steaming if you are not sure if you are pregnant. When trying to conceive, only steam before ovulation. Learn more about tracking your cycle here.
Herbal Blends
You can purchase premade herbal blends for yoni steaming online or at an apothecary. There are many relators that sell herbal blends for all kinds of uses. I prefer to create my own blends, using herbs from my garden. You can also buy high-quality organic herbs to use if you can’t grow the herbs you need.
Below, I’ve shared some of my favorite blends, along with a detailed list of herbs and their uses. I hope this helps you craft your own custom blends using what you have on hand. Keep in mind that everybody is different, and individuals may react differently to various herbs. This information is for educational purposes only and is not intended as medical advice.
Always ensure the herbs you use are free from pesticides and herbicides, as chemical residues can cause unwanted effects. The best choice is to use herbs grown organically—either by you or from a trusted, reputable source that offers third-party quality testing.
